Dallas Cowboys

This season reminds me of the 1993 Movie Groundhog Day, when Bill Murray playing the role of a TV reporter, would relive Groundhog Day over and over again. This is the 3rd season the Cowboys have gone 8 & 8 never winning but never losing, the definition of mediocrity. The difference between the movie and the Cowboys is that Bill Murray learned not to make the same mistakes, the Cowboys not so much.

Today is Super Bowl XLV111 (48) it has been 18 years since the Cowboys made an appearance in the biggest game of the year. However if you want you could take solace in the quote by Duane Thomas former talented and troubled Cowboy running back, he said “ If the Super Bowl is the ultimate game, how come they play it next year”. He is right, there will be Super Bowl 49, the question is who will be the invited guests, and could it be you the Cowboys?

2013 was a record season for the defense; problem is that it was a record set for more points given, most blown leads, in fact it was reported to be arguably the worst defense in NFL history. Ok, let’s look at the offense, they scored 48 on this season’s AFC Champs the Denver Broncos, of course Denver scored 51 to win. But still that’s pretty good against a team like Denver. However two weeks later you get beat by Detroit 31-30. On the bright side the offense line was improved over last year, but it is still by any stretch of the imagination not the 90’s Cowboy line. Nor is Murray, Emmitt Smith, however he did have a decent season and it could be argued it could have been at least approaching a great season if had just been given the ball more! This is what I believe was more maddening to most Cowboy fans, to see the running game working and then see them abandon the run for some unknown reason. In fact if they would have just ran the ball a little more they may have won a couple of close games. Especially if your defense is setting records for all the wrong reasons. Ok, that is my take on 2013, is there any reason to have hope for 2014 season.

Well looking at the moves our GM Jerry Jones is making he would lead you to believe, yes. He has replaced the offensive signal caller and promoted the defense line coach to coordinator. While this may excite Jerry and possibly Jerry Jr. to me it is the most under whelming move since taking another Tight End in 2013 draft. I do not mean to sound so pessimistic but this is the same thing they tried in 2013 and that got us what, the 3rd 8-8 season in a row. In addition Tony Romo will be 34 and will be coming back from a major back surgery. Then there is a matter of cap trouble, how to get money to sign or keep anyone of value. Forgive if I sound like a real Debbie downer, but I’ve seen this show before and unless someone writes a surprise ending, I know well how it will end.

But, all is not lost in Today’s NFL anything can happen; Tony could come back stronger than ever the line should even be better this year. Jason Garret is in the last year of his contract, so he may be ready to pull all stops. As for the defense, it cannot possible be worse, we are getting a new defensive coordinator (Kinda) a new voice has made a difference before. And if we can keep all our starters healthy, maybe just maybe. Ok, summer camp begins when?
