Last Week on the Road y Los Cowboys

The highly anticipated first game of the season gave many of us an unwelcome sense of déjà vu. The Giants tore through the “new and improved” Cowboys defense, leaving fans thinking, ya vimos esta película antes… y no nos gustó entonces, ni ahora. See this movie before.

Pero — this week was better… kinda. The offense looked sharper, and both Cowboy receivers returned to elite form. Dak Prescott passed Tony Romo as the Cowboys’ all‑time touchdown leader at quarterback — without ever reaching an NFC Championship game, much less a Super Bowl.

Still, it’s an achievement. And every living Cowboys fan, myself included, hopes he can finally take us to the promised land.

As for the defense, communication did look improved, and yes, they managed a turnover. Pero honestly — Washington’s mistakes helped the Cowboys look better than they were. I’ll leave it at that for now. We’ll see what next week brings.

Fort Worth Hispanic Celebration

On Tuesday, I attended this year’s Hispanic Heritage celebration at Fort Worth City Hall. The event featured great food, lively music, and a strong community presence.

Some might dismiss it as an obligatory nod to La Raza, but I disagree. Porque the city — and all its citizens — must be reminded that we are here, we are part of Fort Worth, and our culture is something to be proud of. This city benefits from our contributions, our traditions, and our commitment to making Fort Worth work for everyone.

I included a few photos from the event — most are what you’d expect, and one had me asking myself, ¿qué es esto y por qué está aquí? You’ll see what I mean.

League of Women Voters

On Thursday, I attended a “Meet the Candidates” event hosted by the League of Women Voters and the Oakhurst Neighborhood Association. I was genuinely impressed by the turnout — I’ve been to events where there were more speakers than listeners, but not this time.

All the candidates did a great job addressing the audience, and each one volunteered to answer individual questions afterward. I’ve included photos from the event as well.

A special thank‑you to Janet Mattern, local LWV president, and her volunteers for organizing a successful and engaging evening.

La Gran Plaza

El sábado, I and Glen fellow LULAC Council 4568 member joined me at La Gran Plaza, along with Clara Faulkner from the A. Philip Randolph Institute and a former Forest Hill elected official.

This was our second visit during this election cycle. The first time, we registered five new voters and answered many questions. This Saturday, we registered 16 people, checked seven voter statuses, and handed out several vote‑by‑mail applications for family members.

The difference in energy was striking — last time people felt lukewarm; this time they were on fire to vote. We met first‑time voters and individuals with past felonies who are now eligible to vote again.

(As an aside… I still don’t understand how Trump continues to vote with felonies on his record.)

To everyone who visited us — gracias. Your enthusiasm is contagious. The work continues for all of us who believe democracy and human rights are on the ballot.
