On November 21, 2015 Saul "Canelo" Alvarez defeated Miguel Cotto. The fight was touted as another episode in the rivalry between Mexican and Puerto-Rican boxing. In his last fight the Jalicense Alvarez almost murdered James Kirkland, leaving Kirkland face first on the canvas, comatose. Thanks be to God, Kirkland was able to recover after being rushed to the hospital. Miguel Cotto on his part revived his career, teaming up with legendary trainer Freddie Roach to score a devastating knockout against the Argentinean Sergio Martinez, whom he destroyed with lethal left hooks.

Alvarez won the decision against Cotto, but there was some controversy, some people had the fight tied, others thought Cotto had won by a tiny margin. Julio Cesar Chavez complained that Alvarez had not pushed for the knockout and was content with boxing from the outside, getting out jabbed by Cotto. Juan Manuel Marquez saw Cotto winning the fight by a slim margin. These two men are legends of Mexican boxing and gave a thumbs down to Canelo.

Most fans saw Alvarez win a chess match. Alvarez himself explained what happened during the fight, "I didn't want to take any chances of getting surprised by Cotto, he is a dangerous opponent and you cannot be reckless against such a fighter. My intention was to control the fight completely, the win was more important tonight, I had to insure that I won the fight for my fans and for Mexico."

With this fight over, Alvarez now faces a bigger challenge on the horizon: Gennady Golovkin. By beating Cotto, Alvarez has put himself on the hot seat. Everyone expects him to take on Golovkin now. Golovkin is more than a middle-weight champion, he is a master of boxing, hits like a mule, superb conditioning, very strong. Golovkin moves much better than Canelo in the ring. Alvarez has committed himself to taking on the challenge of fighting Golovkin. With Golovkin in the future, the fight against Cotto has quickly been forgotten.
