Why I Voted for Taylor

By A. Govea

(Opinion)

Short answer: as a Mexican American, I would be insane not to.

Now, some folks might disagree — even some other Mexican types. Pero before I go on, when I say “Mexican types,” I’m lumping in Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Venezuelans, and more. Why, you might ask?

Pos, let me tell you what most Mexican types already know: if you live anywhere in the Southwest, like it or not, the white community will call you a Mexican. Is that fair to non‑Mexican Latinos with different heritage? No. But honestly, that’s probably the least of your problems right now in this country — a time when Brown people are being hunted.

The bigger problem is ICE. Agents working what many say is a quota system, with commission‑style incentives per body. Your chances of getting picked up — whether you are a U.S. citizen or have legal status — are better than 50/50. And if it happens anywhere in Tarrant County and you wind up at Waybourn’s jail, guess what?

They have an agreement with ICE to report anyone they think may not have proper documentation, even if that person has legal status. Even if you were brought in over a forgotten traffic ticket. A call, a Bat‑Signal, whatever — it goes out to ICE. And given that due process is now out the window, pues… adiós.

I know I’ve drifted from the title of this opinion piece, but let’s call all of that Reason Number One.

Taylor’s opponent was endorsed and supported by Trump and his MAGA brand. And I’m sorry — when I see or hear anything MAGA, especially their banner, I can’t help but think “Confederate flag.” I truly believe all these folks are racist, because I cannot believe anyone would be so clueless as to support Trump for any good reason.

Por que, if you care about the economy? He gets an F. Foreign policy? F. Education? F. Immigration? Double F. Human decency? Triple F.

Having said all that, if you are a Trump supporter and have a reasonable explanation for supporting him — and by extension Wambsganss — I would genuinely like to hear it. To be clear, this is not just a Democrat vs. Republican thing for me.

Before I get to my next reason for voting for Taylor, I have to address something I read over the weekend. A Wambsganss supporter — with a Mexican‑type last name — said she would “never consider voting for a Democrat” because of “what they push on children.”

Which is what, exactly? The truth in history? Respect for all people? Empathy?

Surely it’s not the idea that Democratic teachers are turning kids trans. Kids leave home a boy and come back a girl. They want unisex bathrooms. They still contend that slavery was bad. Of course, I say all this tongue‑in‑cheek. Pero I don’t think I’m too far off, que no.

Back to why I voted for Taylor. His platform aligns with most folks — including me. Affordable housing for all. Worker rights. Stronger support for veterans. Lower property taxes for working families. Nothing about “build the wall” or “America First” or all the MAGA B.S. you constantly hear in their commercials.

There are more reasons, but they all come back to what I just said. So I’ll leave it at that.

Pero as I wrote earlier, I’m interested in what you think — especially if you disagree. You can reach me at Alberto@holatexas.us.
