Denton Together Coalition

The Denton Together Coalition was the result of a discussion between Mayor Watts and the US Department of Justice Community Relations Service.  The purpose of the Coalition is to resolve racial tension between the ethnic communities in Denton.   The first meeting occurred in July with representatives from the University of North Texas (UNT), League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Denton Police Department, Serve Denton, Denton Black Chamber of Commerce, North Central Texas College, Texas Woman’s University, Denton Independent School District, several local church pastors, Sheriff Department, the community, and business leaders.  On November 19, at the monthly meeting, the Denton Together Coalition leadership along with Mayor Watts signed the Community Proclamation which outlined goals of the coalition.  On the evening of November 19, the Coalition met at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center with citizens of Denton to create a list of issues important to Denton citizens.  Future meetings are being planned throughout the community.  The Denton Together Coalition is looking for groups or churches willing to host the meetings and/or to share their ideas with the Coalition.  Anyone interested in hosting a meeting can contact Jessica Rogers at (940) 349-8302 or at Jessica.Rogers@cityofdenton.com
