Challenges for Representative Ramon Romero
Felix Alvarado
February 4, 2015

In 1950 the thought that a Mexican-American would someday represent the Fairmount area was unimaginable. As you drive around the neighborhood you see remnants of what once was a well-kept White Middle class houses. Some of the houses still have the hitching posts in the front a grim reminder of a bygone era. Today the neighborhood is mostly rundown a vestige of its former self. The occupants are no longer White upper middle class. As a former resident of the Fairmont area told me “Hemphill Street is now just a huge used car sales lot”. The neighborhood has been designated a historical area however it takes more than a sign or designation to maintain a neighborhood to an appearance of over 100 years ago.
Ramon Romero, newly elected State Representative has a huge task as he takes over an area once represented by Lon Burnham. During his tenure Lon fought a lot of battles. He also lost most of them. We hope Ramon will use more human relations skills to achieve good legislation that benefits his constituents. As I looked at the crowd gathered to inaugurate his new office I noticed White, Black and Latino people of all ages. They did not represent a specific party nor was this a gathering driven by race. The people came because they voted for change. Change is a part of life. It is not a mystery of life, it is life. The only mystery is what will change and who will be affected by the change.
And so it is that this once wealthy, well-educated neighborhood now has the same problems as other Latino neighborhoods in Tarrant County such as poverty and education. Ramon has a lot of work to do. But Ramon cannot do all the work by himself. He is going to need good advice and consult from every voter in the District 90. We wish Ramon well.
