Lisa Martinez, a Mexican American poet and author, embodies the phrase "Poetic Expressions from an Overcomer", the title of her first published book. Martinez’s life story is a testament to the transformative power of art and education, forging a path through personal trauma to become a self-published writer, an advocate for those impacted by alcoholism, and an advocate for the public library.

Martinez found her "lifesaver" in reading and writing. Books were her only escape from an alcoholic parent, narcissistic mother, child abuse, and sexual abuse. Instead of letting these experiences isolate her, she channeled them into something meaningful. Her journey of survival compelled her to pursue an associate’s degree in substance abuse counseling when she was 50, seeking a deeper understanding of addiction’s "science and philosophy “to provide resources for others who might feel isolated or alone.

Martinez's advocacy is deeply rooted in her proud Mexican American and Latina identity. She overcame generational and cultural barriers; her grandmother had only a fifth-grade education, and both her mother and she herself quit school at a young age. She recalls being discouraged from reading, with her mother once saying, "Nobody wants a lady who reads all the time". Defying these expectations, Martinez achieved a significant goal: publishing her first book of poetry right when she turned 50. She broke through the chains of generational trauma and did exactly what she set out to do. And kept on going!

Central to Martinez’s passion is her deep connection to the public library. Growing up in a poor family that did not prioritize reading, the library was the only place she could access books. This foundational experience inspired her to write a forthcoming poem, "Ode to the Library," for the second volume of Poetic Expressions for an Overcomer. Her dedication extends to her local community, where she has a poem installed on the poetry trail at Linda Spurlock Park in North Hills. And she strongly believes in the power of self-expression through writing, further stating "I don't care if you can spell, you can't spell, if you use proper grammar, whatever," she says, urging everyone to "use your voice" because everyone has "something interesting to say". She even offers assistance to others who want to self-publish their stories on Amazon, believing that doing so ensures their voices "last beyond" their lifetime. Lisa Martinez's life is a powerful reminder that turning personal pain into purpose can inspire an entire community to read, write, and overcome.
