No, it wasn’t the firing of the G.M. (Jerry Jones). It was—surprise, surprise—exactly what we all expected: the firing of Matt Eberflus. Under Matt, the Cowboys’ defense was the worst in the league, giving up a franchise‑record 511 points this season.
Pero, the person many of us really want to go is J.J. After all, he’s the one who hired Eberflus, even though it was reported that head coach Brian Schottenheimer was in full agreement. . And if you believe that, then maybe you also believe J.J. when he says, “This year we are all in.”
If you do, then you probably never heard the saying George W. Bush once famously mangled: “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.” Bush’s version? “Fool me once… shame on… the point is, you can’t fool me twice.” Or something like that.
For some fans, J.J. has fooled us thirty times—because that’s how long it’s been since the Cowboys even made an NFC Championship appearance. Think about it: thirty years ago, some of us were dancing the Macarena in the stands. We were glued to the O.J. trial. It was also the year we lost Selena.
I say all that to say this: it’s been a hell of a long time. Pero not to worry—Jerry has already assured us he’s “on it.” Which, for me and many in Cowboy Nation, inspires the opposite of comfort. In other words, thirty years is enough. To quote POTUS Bush again: “The point is, you can’t fool me again.”
And this time, I mean it. How about you?
